While others may have used chocolate as a study aide, Silas (Method Man) and Jamal (Redman) ace their way into Harvard via smoking up. Their free-floating hallucinations are hysterical (occasionally witnessed by the sober sect), from a dwarf who dons Christmas attire to the Goliath-sized figure of Silas's mother hovering over a Harvard/Yale rowing match. Unlike the similarly themed Legally Blonde, How High's academic infiltrators are smart from the beginning (they're just unwilling to discard their Fubu for acceptance), suggesting academia should conform to the outsider rather than the other way around. First-time director Jesse Dylan has no real visual style yet he's in firm control of his hyper-extended jokes—Silas and Jamal take revenge out on a Pee-wee-esque student patrolmen's bike (which is put through the vehicular wringer). The filmmakers recognize only projectile vomit works nowadays while the Baby Powder pimp scene is about as wicked and honest a pot-moment since Ashton Kutcher tried to order Chinese food in Dude, Where's My Car?. How many times have we said to ourselves “I'm going to go on that diet and I'm going to lose the extra few pounds or so” only to fail dismally and find ourselves even more depressed and quite often worse off than we were when we started out.

The trouble is that quite often we set ourselves totally unrealistic targets and then wonder why we continually fail to hit them. The answer to this cycle of boom-bust personal healthcare management is to be slightly smarter at the outset and not set our goals too high.

Now this is not to countenance mediocrity and appeasement with regards to personal health matters rather it is an attempt to create an environment where we can be more honest with ourselves and at the end of the day accomplish more of what we set out to do at the very start.

I make this comment as somebody who can talk about this matter with a fair amount of experience. In my own personal case it was after being diagnosed or being told that I suffered from malignant hypertension and if I didn’t start to take better care of myself sooner rather than later then I would have to confine myself having to rely on some fairly serious and powerful drugs for the rest of my life and all that entailed.

I had to make the lifestyle changes and looking back after some five years some of them turned out to be fairly drastic ones but at least some five years later those lifestyle changes have started to develop a routine of their own.

It wasn't easy and I wouldn’t want to start by saying that it was but in my case I started small and built gradually. Going back to the maxim “success by the yard is hard”, some of the lifestyle changes took several years to accomplish while some of them took several weeks.

The important thing is that at all times stay focused on the big picture and expect that in some cases that for every two steps forward you take, you wind up taking one step backward. In my case my initial blood pressure reading was 216/160 (the generally accepted target level should be 120/80) and so I fell fairly and squarely into the middle of the bracket entitled “Malignant Hypertension”.

Here we are five years later and as a result of an entire campaign of lifestyle changes some bigger than others and conversely some smaller than others I now find myself with that ideal blood pressure reading of 116/76.

As I said some lifestyle changes were easier to accomplish than others but in all cases the end result has been worth it.

So the message of all of this has to be if you are confronted by necessity of a situation where you have to make lifestyle changes then plan your changes across the board and if necessary start slowly and build up.

Start Making Some Lifestyle Changes When You Discover You Have High Blood Pressure

I came across a phrase the other day whilst doing some research on some articles about high blood pressure and the phrase was “high blood pressure symptom in man”. Now the phrase might be a slightly awkward phrase whilst looking at it from an English-language perspective and would certainly not be one of the search terms that I would definitely use but the key thing that really came to mind here in my mind was that it highlights how possibly confused and poorly served we are when it comes to trying to understand the various symptoms that we think might be indicative of high blood pressure.



Now writing as somebody who himself was diagnosed by accident with what is termed as “malignant hypertension” just over five years ago; I can well understand this paranoia in trying to spot symptoms at an earlier stage as is possible but the truth of the matter is that in the majority of cases this is just not possible.

Now to slightly backtrack here, let me be slightly more explicit as to what exactly malignant hypertension is. Now in the various stages or levels of hypertension, malignant hypertension is the worst. Now this is a sobering thought believe me and one that does tend to concentrate the mind slightly but fear not it isn't as bad nowadays as it was 40 years.

Forty years ago if you were given a diagnosis of malignant hypertension then by and large your doctor may just as well have given you a death sentence. Given the fact that as far as most people are concerned the ideal level for blood pressure or hypertension is what they call 120/80 then if your blood pressure readings exceed 200/130 then you can understand why there is this panic when the doctors encounter a patient with a reading this high.

In my case the reading was in the region of 216/160 so you can understand that at this point there were alarm bells ringing all over the place when the doctors got round to dealing with me.

As I mentioned earlier, forty odd years ago if you were diagnosed with a level of hypertension this high then there was very little the doctors could do about it but thankfully in today's medical climate and with today's research there is an awful lot they can do when they encounter a level of blood pressure this high.

Now medication will only take you so far and there comes a point when will power and the desire to live takes over and you force yourself into some fairly major lifestyle changes. As my cardiologist said to me five years ago you have a simple choice to make in that you had better start making some lifestyle changes soon or you will have to accept the fact that you will be taking some fairly strong medication for the rest of your life.

Now given the fact that I'm a firm believer in that if you spend a fair amount of time ingesting foreign chemicals into your body then you are going to have to accept the fact that sooner or later there are going to be some fairly serious reactions to this and some fairly hefty side effects, then you can understand why I am now a firm believer in lifestyle changes.

Nothing was changed overnight and in fact some lifestyle changes took longer to implement than was ideal but at least five years later I can safely say that at no other time during my six monthly checkups over the last 18 months has my blood pressure reading ever been greater than 120/80.

So go on make that lifestyle change it doesn't have to be major, start small and build up but at least start somewhere.

HOW HIGH TO PULL THE FOOT UP IN RUNNING?

To know the answer to this question, one has to understand the purpose of the "pull" in running.

In the Pose Method of Running, the pull is the last element of the technique that allows for the most efficient transition from one foot to the other. That's the purpose, now let's elaborate.

Running is nothing but "change of support". If all we need to do is change our support, then the ultimate goal is to do that action with the least possible effort. Actively working just one group of muscles - the hamstrings - fits the purpose. So to run is to pull your feet up with hamstrings, while leaning forward. What for? To change support to continue to move forward.

So how high and how intense is the pull? It should only be high enough and strong enough to break contact with the ground. Due to inertia the foot will naturally come up higher, if you're running at a higher speed. And it will travel lower at a slower pace.

You will notice that putting less intentional effort into pulling your feet up will help you do it correctly, by utilizing the hamstrings only. You will also notice that such an important thing as high cadence is easier to achieve, if you don't pull your feet all the way up.

The general rule is - you're better off "under-doing" it, than "over-doing" it. If you pull too high and too hard you will waste energy and will tire your hamstrings. The exaggerated motion of the pull, demonstrated in the running drills, is strictly for learning purposes, to help your body learn better patterns of movement required for running.
